Mmemorandum submitted to Union Minister of India

During the 6th Pravasi Prabharthi Day Celebrations organized in Kozhikode on 9th, 10th and 11th January, 2008 a memorandum containing the requests and demands of NRIs all over the world and Gulf Returnees was submitted to the Union Minister of State for Law & Justice Sri. K.Venkatapathy, by Sri. Kadakkal Ramesh, Vice Chairman, Kerala State NRIs and Gulf Returnees co-ordination Council. The Union Minister received the memorandum on behalf of the Central Government and he promised on the occasion that he will discuss with the Prime Minister about the problems faced by NRIs and Gulf returnees and sincerely try to find out solutions for them.
Pravasi Bharathi Day Celebrations were organized this year also by Pravasi Bharathi News Bulletin and Indo-Arab friends Forum. Every year we celebrate this since 2003 and honour NRIs from different parts of the world on the occasion. Every year we honour social leaders also who contribute for the welfare of NRIs. In the previous years we have honoured former Chief Minister of Kerala Sri. E.K.Nayanar, former Minister Sri. M.M.Hassan, present Ministers Sri. C.Divakaran and Sri. N.K.Premachandran. This year we honoured former Union Minister Sri. O.Rajagopal and former state minister Sri. K.Pankajakshan.
Prominent NRIs who were honoured by us during the last six years are Dr. P.Mohammed Ali, Sri. C.K.Menon, Sri.John Titus, Sri.Gokulam Gopalan,, Smt. Lekha Sreenivasan, Sri. S.Radhakrishnan, Sri. K. Muraleedharan, Sri. J. Sugathan, Sri. P.N.C Menon, Sri. Vijayan Thomas, Sri. Kris Gopalakrishnan, Smt. Zareena Ashraf etc.
The memorandum contains several points which came up in the discussion held in the seminar conducted during the 6th Pravasi Bharathi Day Celebrations. Some of the main points are mentioned below:
1. Formation of an NRI Corporation in every state under the full control of the Union Government, to take care of the problems faced by NRIs and Gulf Returnees. It should
be fully funded by Union Government. The body should be constituted with people who have really faced the problems while working abroad.
2. More aircrafts to be introduced in the Gulf sector to avoid heavy rush during seasons
like school holidays, Onam, Christmas, Eid etc.
3. More facilities in the Passport Offices all over Kerala.
4. Protection for women workers , from their sponsors and travel agents, who go abroad.
5. Emigration rules are to be simplified, so that more unemployed, skilled people can travel abroad for new jobs.
6. Gulf Returnees should be given reservation in the government jobs.
7. Financial assistance for Gulf Returnees to start small business in their home town.
8. Financial assistance for those people who returned due to ill health.
9. Provide employment for the kins of those killed in the Gulf or who became physically handicapped in accidents in the Gulf.
10. Interest free loans for women returnees to start their own small scale industry.
11. Financial assistance for those poor gulf returnees, for the education, treatment and marriage of their children.
12. Pension for all Gulf Returnees who have crossed the age of 55.
