Pravasi Bharathi Day Celebrations in Kerala - 2008

As in the previous years, it is decided to celebrate 'Pravasi Bharathi Diwas' this year also.
9th January was declared by Vajpayee Government as Pravasi Bharathi Diwas in the year 2002 to honour millions of Non Resident Indians who worked hard to improve the living conditions of the people of India. In Kerala celebrations are conducted under the auspices of Pravasi Bharathi News Bulletin, NRI Co-Ordination Council and Indo_Arab friendship Forum.
This is the sixth consecutive year that we organise celebrations during Pravasi Bharathi Diwas.

Pravasi Bharathi News bulletin is an NRI magazine published from Trivandrum, since last two years, which is the mouthpiece of thousands of NRIs working abroad. We present the problems of NRIs, to the State as well as central governments. Every month we bringout a special edition with a feature of a well known NRI. Every month 10,000 copies are printed, out of which 5,000 copies are going to USA, Europe, Middle East, Singapore, Australia etc. Copies are sent to Union Ministers from kerala and Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister of Kerala, Ministers, MPs, MLAs, NRIs, social leaders, gulf returnees, businessmen in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Chennai, Bangalore and Mumbai.

During Pravasi Bharathi Day Celebrations we honour Social Leaders and NRIs from different parts of the world, with awards. Social leaders who already received our awards are former Chief Minister of Kerala Sri. E.K.Nayanar, Former State Minsiter Sri.M.M.Hassan, Present Minsiter Sri.C.Divakaran, Present Minister Sri. N.K.Premachandran etc. Prominent NRIs who received our awards in the previous years are Sri. Galfar Muhammed Ali, Sri. C.K.Menon,
Smt. Lekha Sreenivasan, Sri. John Titus(USA), Smt. Achamma Varghese(DUBAI), Sri. Gokulam Gopalan, Sri. Baby Mathew (Jeevan TV), Sri. S. Radhakrishnan, Sri. Willet Koreya, Sri. Noushad Punnathala, Sri.K.Muraleedharan (SFC), Sri. J.Sugathan (Indroyal), Sri. Bobby John (London), Sri. Sasidharan Nair (FOKANA), Dr. P.Asokan (SP Fort), Sri. Polly Mathew (Somatheeram) , Smt. Latha K. Namboothiri (Kristal group) etc.

We also organise cultural programs for the children of NRIs and returnees to promote talents in them. We conduct seminars on self employment opportunities for returnees, we distribute financial assistance for education, treatment, marriage etc during the celebrations.

This time the functions will be held at Kozhikode on 9th, 10th and 11th of January, 2008. On 9th, January oath taking ceremony will be held at central stadium Kozhikode. Union Cabinet Minister for Defence Sri. A.K.Antony will inaugurate the function on 10th January. Union Law Minister Sri. K. Venkatapathy will distribute the Awards on 11th, January, at 5.30 P.M at Nalanda Auditorium, at Kozhikode. State Ministers Sri. P.K. Gurudasan, Sri. Elamaram Karim, Sri. N.K.Premachandran and Sri. Mullakkara Retnakaran and Mayor of Kozhikode will attend different functions on these days.

This time also around ten prominent NRIs from different parts of the world will be honoured
